I’ve had a lot of happiness in my life: 1) the birth of my children; 2) getting into Lamda when I was 17; 3) meeting my wife; 4) and the renewal of our marriage vows and my 60th birthday.
Whenever it was, I didn't realise it fully.
In my 60s. So many things that tortured me when I was younger have fallen away. Writing The Apology, the letter I wrote in my father’s voice, apologising for abusing me, has freed me from the last vestiges of anger, confusion, rancour and hate. It released me from a frame that had determined my life.
When I got a doctorate from my alma mater, Brunel. My mother always wanted me to become a doctor.
I cry at everything – adverts, Gogglebox, hugging my kids. I love crying: it’s like your pain is laughing.

The capacity to genuinely enjoy going to the gym.
To my kids, for my shortcomings.
