A trip that was, like, $100k. It was a lot of money and I didn’t even go on it. It was to St Barts. I paid for me and my friends and a lot of stuff fell apart, and then it ended up with one of my friends just going with his girlfriend.

When I was 24 or 25, I bought a Warhol canvas. It was a lot of money to throw down on a little painting, but I’ve always loved art.

When I was 18, I bought a boat for a million pounds and sold it a year later for just over half the price.

I spent years trying to work out the secret of acting. I read all the books by the great teachers and got nowhere. They were so busy making it sound complex. I just couldn’t figure it out. Then one day my acting coach in LA told me to ‘think before you act’. It was so simple – when you are acting don’t just speak the words, but concentrate and think about what you are going to say all the time. It worked for me.

Last week when I read a passage from the novel my wife is writing.
