Bobby Womack, 68, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. At nine he formed a gospel group with his four brothers. They were spotted by Sam Cooke and signed with his label SAR to record R&B as the Valentinos. After Cooke was shot dead in 1964, Womack married his widow Barbara. He has written songs for and played with Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. He released the critically acclaimed solo album The Poet in 1981. The Bravest Man In The Universe, his first album in two decades, won album of the year at the 2012 Q awards.
