Johnny Marr is a guitarist and songwriter best known for his work with the Smiths, Modest Mouse, and the Pretenders. He has also worked with Billie Eilish, Talking Heads, and Oasis, among many others. He collaborated with composer Hans Zimmer on the score for Christopher Nolan’s 2010 film Inception . Since 2013, Marr has released four solo albums. His memoir, Set the Boy Free , was published in 2016. In 2023, he released the compilation Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr and the book Marr’s Guitars , which catalogs his collection of vintage instruments.

I like to hammer on and get it done. That doesn’t mean you should rush it or be impatient. I’m very fortunate, because doing what I do, there is a matter of deadlines that come into place if I’m making a record. There is the pressure of having members of my band that I employ who have mortgages, and then management and record company who rely on me to deliver. But I’m glad to have that pressure. Again, it’s a privilege. It means I’m doing well, but it means I have to deliver. It gives you an endpoint.
