Julia Donaldson, 62, grew up in London. After studying at Bristol University, she worked in publishing and as a teacher. She also wrote songs for children's television, and in 1993 one of her compositions was made into a book, A Squash And A Squeeze. She has since written more than 100 books and plays for children and teenagers, including The Gruffalo. She is the new children's laureate, and will appear at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, which opens today. She lives in Glasgow.
