Mary Berry, 78, was raised in Bath. At 21, she trained at Le Cordon Bleu Paris and went on to become cookery editor of Ideal Home magazine, to write recipe books and to launch Aga workshops. She first appeared on television during the 1970s and 1980s, but it is her role as a judge on The Great British Bake Off that made her famous. She is married and has two surviving children, Annabel and Thomas; her son William died in a car accident at 19. Her autobiography, Recipe For Life, has just been published.
