Reinhold Messner is an Italian climber and author from South Tyrol who made the first ascent of Everest without supplementary oxygen, with Peter Habeler, in 1978, and the first solo ascent in 1980. He was the first person to climb all fourteen peaks above eight thousand metres.

I was very well organized in my things. I am an exceptional worker, not only a risk taker. And I was not in competition with anybody. Many people died because they were in competition.
