Rick Stein, 66, spent his childhood in Oxfordshire and Cornwall. He graduated from Oxford University and set up a nightclub in Padstow. After one fight too many, the police closed it down, but he kept his licence to serve food. He now owns and runs four restaurants in Padstow with his ex-wife, Jill. In 2003, he was awarded an OBE for services to West Country tourism. He divides his time between Padstow and Sydney, where he runs Rick Stein at Bannisters with his second wife. His memoir, Under A Mackerel Sky, has just been published.
