To my father, for not telling him the truth when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and going along with the family lie that he had hepatitis, when he knew he didn’t. At the age of 17, I lacked the courage and strength to stand up for what I believed.
My kids, for not being around much.
My mother, because when I’m stressed, I can be really horrible to her.
Anyone whose party I said I’d go to and didn’t turn up. I can get quite socially anxious at times.
Safety or alarm, I can never decide which.
I bumped into an old schoolteacher and her even more ancient and deaf sister, and she shouted to her, “Remember Esther? Now she writes books … ABOUT HERSELF.”
I can always see two points of view, which makes it hard to have a row.
Not joining the circus.
An inability to see the other side.
For the words to fly from my fingers as just occasionally they do.
