I’ve had a surprising number of near-death experiences: I was nearly blown up by a landmine in Sudan; I was stranded on the Zambezi river at night; I was bucked off a rodeo horse in Arizona and had to be airlifted to hospital; and, worst of all, I once ate a Pot Noodle.
I was knocked over by a taxi in Liverpool when I was seven. And I fell off the seventh storey of a car park when I was 10 and broke both legs, my collarbone and my arm.
A blood clot in my artery when I was 23.
I was very ill with anorexia when I was a teenager. I went into hospital voluntarily, otherwise they were going to section me.
Now. I am father to Albert, seven, and Esme, six. I’ve never experienced happiness as complete as caring for them.
As a loving father.

Elsie Eccleston, my mother, for her emotional intelligence, kindness, intense curiosity, and chicken and leek pies.
To my children, because their mum and dad’s relationship failed, and I know that has caused them great sadness.
