In the early 90s, in the Andes, caught in an atrocious storm above 20,000ft with three others. We were all in a very bad way. Some guys close to us perished; we were lucky.
I hit a bit of lumpy tarmac driving my motorbike over the Pyrenees in the early 1980s. There was no safety barrier and I found myself riding along the edge of a precipice on half the width of the tyres for 100 yards.
When the media, en masse, reported my imminent demise.
I’ve been asleep at the wheel on the M11, had an engine fire over the Atlantic in a light aircraft, driven unprotected through an enemy firing zone to do a gig in wartime Sarajevo – the list goes on and on. But I did have stage 3 throat cancer and was cured by some fantastic UK medics.
Deciding what I wanted to do at 15 and, against all odds, doing it.
Archaeologist, pop star, store cashier.
A sustainable future for all. I could finally stop worrying.
Heady, dizzying, magical. Time stops.
Can I say: maybe tomorrow?
