When our baby took to the boob for the first time: happy tears at him having his first feed, but also sad at the thought of how many more boobs he’ll seek out before he’s truly happy.

View all 193 →I last shed a tear when my nephew, who is under 10, announced that he was learning the trombone. When I was about the same age and wanted to learn the trumpet, a music teacher said: “The trumpet isn’t for you. You’ve got too-thick lips.”
I cried last week after talking about marriage equality with my daughters. My oldest let slip that she believed that if the supreme court overturned Obergefell, she wouldn’t have parents any more. I felt angry with my country and ashamed that I didn’t consider the possibility that she might think that.
I teared up when I did a voiceover for my memoir while talking about my mother-in-law, whom I adored and miss so much.
