I have a penchant for happiness. I have experienced euphoria before a migraine, which may not count, but I have also felt immense happiness leaning back in a chair in sunlight, puttering in my garden, reading, dancing, immediately after giving birth and when writing.
At college: missing lectures to rehearse plays and go daytime drinking. Oh, and the baby’s birth.
I remember thinking, when I was in my early 30s, that this is the best age to be, and I still believe your 30s are a wonderful time. But I think I am pretty happy now.
I am always happiest when I am making my art.
I cried recently, thinking about my late wife.
My late wife – she died of cancer. We tried everything we could do to save her. I wish that I could have done more and that I could have been with her at the moment she passed away. I couldn’t be in that room, because I knew it would be so devastating that I wouldn’t be able to take care of the kids after.
A meal alfresco with people I love.
Losing one of my children, as there is no greater loss.

I am always disappointed in myself. I always feel that I haven’t achieved enough, or been as good a parent as I could be.
