Won the 400 metres at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 after lighting the cauldron at the opening ceremony, and took world titles in the event in 1997 and 1999. A Kuku Yalanji and Birri Gubba woman, she was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an individual Olympic gold medal.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

I was really vulnerable right before I left the coach, and I said to him, 'Are you still going to love me if I don't win this thing?'
