Delia Smith, 70, was born in Surrey. After leaving school at 16 with no qualifications, she worked in hairdressing, as a shop assistant and for a travel agency. At 21 she began washing up, waitressing and eventually cooking in a small London restaurant, The Singing Chef. In 1969 she became a cookery writer for the Daily Mirror. In 1971 she published her first book, How To Cheat At Cooking, and her television career began two years later. She has sold more than 21m books. Delia's Happy Christmas is published by Ebury, and her Classic Christmas Cake Prepared Ingredients Box is available at Waitrose.
