United States Navy rear admiral; computer scientist; co-designer of COBOL

United States · b. 1906

Worked on the Harvard Mark I during the Second World War and led the team that produced the first compiler. Was central to the development of COBOL and served in the United States Navy until 1986, retiring as a rear admiral. Died in 1992.

What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self, and what should they ignore?

Always remember that it's much easier to apologize than to get permission. In this world of computers, the best thing to do is to do it.
