I was a terrible secretary in a publishing company (clumsy, disorganised, hid letters behind the filing cabinet because I was supposed to have done something with them and I wasn’t sure what).

At the BBC, in the old days, a piece of paper was sent to various households for them to report on what they’d watched that week. In my early 20s, I collated the data. It was deeply boring.
Selling newspapers outside the grocery store for two years.
I was a door-to-door carpet-cleaning salesman. I thought my life was going to end, so I binned that after a day.
Redeeming mortgages. I did it for a few weeks, and it sealed the deal that I wanted a career in entertainment.
Anxiety. Have I finished this? Will I make the deadline? Could I have done that better? Are the children OK? Is the husband OK? Is the dog OK? Did I leave the oven on?
Warm and golden, and it smells delicious.
My children. My marriage. All those books.
