Civil rights organiser from Derry who led the Social Democratic and Labour Party from 1979 to 2001 and was one of the principal architects of the Northern Ireland peace process. Shared the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize with David Trimble for the Good Friday Agreement.

I wasn’t interested in politics in those days, but I was interested in helping people, and I got involved in the Foundation of the Credit Union movement. And, of all the things I’ve been doing, it’s the thing I’m proudest of because no movement has done more good for the people of Ireland, north and south, than the credit union movement.
