Ed Balls, 41, was born in Norwich. He was educated privately and went on to Oxford University and Harvard. In 1994, he became economic adviser to Gordon Brown, who was then shadow chancellor. Between 1999 and 2004, he was chief economic adviser to the Treasury. In May 2005, he was elected Labour MP for Normanton; since 2007 he has been schools secretary. He is married to Yvette Cooper, chief secretary to the Treasury; they have three children and homes in West Yorkshire and London.
