Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist who organised the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, a nonviolent movement of Christian and Muslim women that helped bring the Second Liberian Civil War to an end in 2003. She shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.

I think the turning point was when my daughter turned 17, and I drank 17 glasses of wine straight. ... But that was my escape from everything I had gone through from the movement — because even as we did the movement, there were traumas that were piling up.
