Mary Portas, 51, was born and brought up in Hertfordshire. She started her career as a Saturday girl in John Lewis. In 1989, she joined Harvey Nichols, and left in 1997 to found the marketing agency Yellowdoor. In 2007, she began her television career with the BBC2 series Mary Queen Of Shops. In 2011, she launched her own clothing, footwear and accessories collection with House of Fraser. Her new Channel 4 series, Mary's Bottom Line, follows her crusade to reignite the UK clothing industry. She lives in London with her two children by her former husband, and her partner, Melanie Rickey.
