Nicola Adams, 30, was born in Leeds. She started boxing at the age of 12. In 2007, she took silver in the European championships, and became the first Englishwoman to win a medal in a major tournament. She qualified for the London Olympics by winning her third world silver medal in 2012. The winner of the first Olympic women's boxing gold medal, she is shortlisted for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which is broadcast live tomorrow night.
