Tommy Hilfiger, 60, was born in Elmira, New York State, one of nine children. He opened a small chain of boutiques called People's Place in 1969 when he was still at high school. Ten years later he moved to New York City, became a fashion designer and in 1985 showed his first signature men's collection. Over the years he expanded into womenswear, clothes for children, accessories, fragrances and home furnishings. There are more than 1,000 Tommy Hilfiger stores worldwide and a new flagship shop in London has just opened on Brompton Road. Hilfiger is married for the second time and has seven children.
