During the war - to a teenager, wartime is very exciting. And when there was no traffic, I could ride my bike about the lovely Yorkshire lanes with not a car in sight. And I'm very happy today because I'm not skint.

Sir Jimmy Savile OBE, 80, was born in Leeds, the youngest of seven children. After seven years working as a coal miner, he became a dance hall manager, then a DJ. He spent 19 years at Radio 1, presented the first and last editions of Top Of The Pops (on New Year's Day 1964 and last July), and from 1975 to 1994 presented the cult TV series Jim'll Fix It. A veteran marathon runner, he has helped raise millions for charity.
