Joan Bakewell, 80, was born in Stockport. In 1965, she was one of the first women to break into television journalism, as presenter of the BBC2 arts show Late Night Line-up. She has hosted numerous documentary and discussion series, and was Labour's tsar for the elderly during the last government; she was made a peer in 2011. From next month, she presents Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year.
