We used to have one of those gat guns that shot pellets. My friend pretty much had the thing at point-blank range to my temple. It popped out and completed its trajectory about a millimetre from my head.
Last Christmas I was clipped by a train. Mum was dying so my head was elsewhere. I was walking home and had to cross one of those crossings that say, “Stop, look and listen.” I didn’t do any of those things, and I had my headphones in so I couldn’t even hear the train. It clipped my left elbow.
In my dreams: I’ll feel as if I am falling towards a white light and then suddenly I wake up.
When I was 13, I was on a bicycle and got hit by a taxi in New York.
Often, with laughter.
Holidays. For years, I would book a big house in Britain for a week for the entire family. There would be 14 of us. I don’t regret a penny.
My parents. They have been the best example of a loving and respectful marriage over 60 years.
Having to clean out my daughter’s digs at university. The memory of the state of that toilet still lives with me.
Not being able to keep up piano lessons. I did a year and I was really good and loved it and then my parents couldn’t afford for me to continue.
