My dad’s family, for fake drowning when I was 12 on holiday in France – it caused such embarrassment that we had to leave. All because I wanted to get the inflatable ring off my brother. It still haunts me. I guess acting was always going to be my future.

View all 209 →My parents. We didn’t realise how absolutely desperate they were when we left Germany, because my father couldn’t earn anything. A letter turned up fairly recently in which he said, “We’ve been through a terrible time because Julia [my mother] never stopped talking about suicide and not just for herself, but to take the children with her.”
It would be my mum. She was a terrible alcoholic and I spent a lot of my time kind of hating her but, in the past five years, I realised why she did what she did and I could forgive.
Everybody I’ve lost to suicide. When someone dies in that tragic way, you always feel you could have done more.

I used to do silver service waitressing at parties and events. The job was great, but there was constant harassment and groping from older men, and I hadn’t found my voice yet. It’s terrifying when you are young and you need a job.
