Danny Alexander, 41, grew up on the Isle of Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides. Having read philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford, he worked as a press officer for the Scottish Liberal Democrats, the Britain in Europe campaign and the Cairngorms national park. Since 2005, he has been Liberal Democrat MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. He became Nick Clegg's chief of staff and was key in the negotiations that formed the coalition. Initially appointed secretary of state for Scotland, he is now chief secretary to the Treasury and a member of the privy council. He is married with two children and lives in Aviemore.
